Garbage Pail Kids Chrome Series 2

We knew it was coming...we just didn't know when! Now we know that Garbage Pail Kids Chrome Series 2 will burst onto the scene on July 30, 2014. Reactions were mixed to Series 1, but considering how many people consider Series 2 to be their favorite set I think this will be fairly popular. And it should come as a surprise to no one that this set is packed to the gills with parallels, chase, and more. Here's a quick look at the breakdown:

  • Base set has 110 cards (84 original Series 2 cards + 26 cards featuring 13 returning characters, each with an 'a/b' name variation)
  • Concept Sketch (1:3 packs) - variations that showcase early artwork from John Pound
  • Basic Refractors (1:3 packs) - parallel the base set and feature distinct rainbow shimmer background
  • Other Refractors: Prism (1:199 packs) Gold (50 per card) SuperFractor (1/1)
  • Black and Gold Refractors are included in this set and available in Hobby release packs only (odds unknown)
  • Printing Plates (odds unknown) - plates during the production of the Chrome series
  • Artist Autographs (2,200 total) - special cards featuring a signature from John Pound
  • c-name Short Print Variations (1:100 packs) - available for 20 different cards
  • Prize Redemptions (50 total) - redeemable for special prizes (Ex. uncut sheet of refractors)

I for one welcome Chrome Series 2...because it means we are one step closer to Chrome Series 3 which will allow me to purchase a chrome version of my favorite sticker ever...JOE Blow!! With MiniKins Series 2 coming next month and the promise of 2014 Series 2 later this year it's shaping up to be another busy (and expensive!!) year for GPK-collectors!!

2013 Garbage Pail Kids Mini Cards

Uncle...uncle!! Seriously, I feel like at this point Topps has us in a figure-4 leg lock and they are just continuing to apply pressure. The releases are coming without a break, and collectors are frustrated, confused, and most of all...BROKE! Fresh on the heels of Chrome Series 1, Brand New Series 3, a calendar, a new poster set, greeting cards, and MiniKins - we are presented with a new mini set (a couple months before 2014 Series 1 hits!). And be warned...this set is a monster.

On the off-chance you can afford it, here are the details:

  • Available now...exclusively via the Topps website
  • Mini card measures 2 1/4” x 3 1/8”
  • 396 sticker Base Set (110 from BNS1, 146 from BNS2, 132 from BNS3 + 8 new stickers)
  • Black Parallels (1:pack)
  • Gold Parallels (1:box - 10 of each sticker)
  • Printing Plates (1:48 packs)
  • Artist Autos (1:48 packs)
  • Mini Sketch Cards (1:253 packs)
  • According to Topps online - "At least one 'hit' per box"
  • 8 cards per pack, 24 packs per box
Auto Card Sample Sketch Card Sample Pack Example Box Example

To be clear, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but this is becoming painful. Back in 1986 when they released a handful of series it was different...those were 25 cents a pack!! These releases are NOT cheap, and they are massive, making it very hard for collectors to actually ENJOY the hobby. But alas, new GPK is good because it means the brand is still alive and kicking. So stop reading my dribble and head on over HERE to buy some!!

Topps Updates from Non Sports Card Show

This past weekend I attended the Philly Non Sports Card Show in Allentown and was fortunate enough to not only meet some of the people behind the scenes at Topps, but a number of the artists as well. Of particular interest to Garbage Pail Kids fans was the featured Panel Discussion that took place Sunday morning. Partly from their presentation, and partly because I asked some pushy questions, Topps ended up providing some great information on upcoming releases! Here's a quick rundown on some news that came out of this weekend:

GARBAGE PAIL KIDS MINIKINS

  • Series 1 on schedule to release in October, 2013
  • 26 figures with 6 color variations/figure
  • Color variations are: blue, red, green, ultra-rare yellow, full-color, and limited edition GOLD
  • Gold figures will be rewarded as prizes for YouTube video submissions, and there will be a total of 26 gold figures of each character
  • Topps has created an official YouTube channel for MiniKins here, and will use it to advertise the release
  • September will see the release of various teaser videos. In October they will release six 'Episodes' featuring the characters in mini-movies plus one music video! Videos will continue to be released in November and onward.
  • Topps had an empty Gravity Feed box on display (see pics)…and they will be priced at $2.99 for 1 pack that includes 2 figures and 1 sticker
  • Series 2 is in the works, and Beasty Boyd will be one of the characters (see pics)
GARBAGE PAIL KIDS GREETING CARDS
  • These will release in November, 2013
  • This will be an ONLINE-ONLY release from Topps
  • Price will be $19.99/box
  • Box will contain 10 5x7" greeting cards
  • Cards will be seasonal (Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years, etc)
  • There is only one scheduled printing of the cards…and they will be marked as such ("First Printing"). If the series is successful they will look into printing additional cards that will NOT contain the "First Printing" designation
  • This product is being viewed as a test run for Topps, and if it is successful they will print and release additional series in 2014
GARBAGE PAIL KIDS BRAND NEW SERIES 3
  • BNS3 is on schedule to release in October, 2013
  • This series will be the last of the 'Brand New Series' line from Topps
  • Will introduce 'Adam Bombing' as a subset, in addition to bringing back the 'Be a GPK' redemption prize (5 Grand Prize winners)
  • Will be released in both Hobby and Retail variations
  • See pics below for some 'Making Of' progress shots, illustrating some of the details that change between concept and final art

All in all it was a VERY busy couple of days, but I was able to snag a few pics…here's a peek into my extremely entertaining (and informative!) weekend:

Garbage Pail Kids 2014 Series 1

Hoooo boy...hold onto your butts! Hot off the press is the release information for Garbage Pail Kids 2014 Series 1! You read that right, yet ANOTHER rebranding (that honestly doesn't fit quite so nicely with OS, ANS, FB, C - what do we call this, 2K14S1?!?) Anyway, there's lots to cover, so let's get to it.

First off...Topps, Inc. continues to kill it with massive sets containing loads of fun inserts. This set is no different with a base set consisting of 110 new cards (or 55 new characters). Parallels refuse to die but appear to be limited to just Black and Gold. There's also Printing Plates and Bonus Stickers, but honestly...what sets this release apart is the fun new 'date-specific' tie-ins!

That's right...this Series has some direct connections to the Winter Olympics that kick off in Sochi just days after the release date! The Olympic-themed cards are called 'Olym-Picks', and have a variety of different subsets. Olym-Picks Athletes consist of 11 characters (22 cards) and poke fun at popular Olympic Sports. Olym-Picks Motion Cards (set of 10) bring back the lenticular technology to bring crashes and general GPK-goodness to life. Also new are Etched Foil Olym-Picks Medals for 10 different events (yes, there is a Bronze, Silver, and Gold version for each!) Lastly, Olym-Picks C Variations provide a third variation for 10 select characters.

Phew! That's a TON of chase/insert/etc. What, there's more?!?! Why yes, this Series also debuts some other exclusive parallels including Metallic Red and Full-Bleed Canvas. There's also Blank Back, Cloth Stickers, and Sepia. And don't forget Die-Cut Sketch Cards...and Texture Relics that use different materials to add an actual "feel" to the stickers. And Art Variations. Seriously, make it stop!! My bank account just threw up all over itself.

It's important to note that at the time of this writing this appears to be a Hobby-only release. No retail! In fact, there are two different kinds of boxes:
- HOBBY BOX: 24 packs/box, 10 cards/pack
- HOBBY COLLECTOR BOX: 24 packs/box, 6 cards/pack

Here's my attempt at a quick rundown of the various inserts and odds you will find with Garbage Pail Kids 2014 Series 1:

  • RELEASE DATE: January 29, 2014
  • BASE SET: 110 stickers (55 different 'a' and 'b' names)
  • PARALLELS: Black (1:2 packs), Gold (85 per card)
  • PRINTING PLATES: Odds unknown
  • METALLIC RED: 1 per pack (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • FULL-BLEED CANVAS: 1 per pack (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • BLANK BACK: 1:24 packs (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • CLOTH STICKER: 1:48 packs (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • SEPIA: 1:48 packs (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • OLYM-PICKS ATHLETES: 22 stickers (11 different 'a' and 'b' names)
  • OLYM-PICKS C VARIATIONS: 10 (1:100 packs)
  • OLYM-PICKS MOTION CARDS: 10 (odds unknown)
  • ETCHED FOIL OLYM-PICKS MEDALS: 30 (10 cards with 3 variations each, odds unknown)
  • BONUS STICKERS: 8 (1:24 packs)
  • ARTIST AUTOGRAPHS: Odds unknown
  • SKETCH CARDS: Odds unknown
  • DIE-CUT SKETCH CARDS: 500 total (Odds unknown) (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • TEXTURE RELICS: 1:48 packs (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)
  • ART VARIATIONS: 1/case (Hobby-Collector Box exclusive)

Garbage Pail Kids Brand New Series 3

Brand New Series 3 is coming...and it's a beast! Topps, Inc. is pulling out all the stops with what looks to be their biggest release yet. The base set, although slightly smaller than BNS2, will still provide collectors with 66 new GPK characters. And love 'em or hate 'em, the Parallels are back for another run in BNS3 with Black, Silver, and Gold Chase cards inserted randomly in packs for collectors to find. Sketch Cards, Motion Cards, 'Be a Garbage Pail Kid Contest' Cards, and Printing Plates are also part of this massive release...but perhaps the best news is that there are some new ideas and inserts in BNS3!

One part of BNS3 that is sure to be huge is the introduction of Artist Autograph Cards. These have a GPK character on the top half of the card and the artist's autograph on the bottom half. They look great and are sure to cause quite a stir in the collecting community. Another new insert is the Sticker Scenes. This 10 card subset features classic Garbage Pail Kids characters interacting with each other. And if those weren't enough, there is also a 10 sticker subset titled Adam Bombing, comprised of historical GPK figures with their heads exploding. Sounds like it could be similar to Adam Mania, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Here's a quick rundown of the various inserts and odds you will find in Brand New Series 3:

  • 132 sticker Base Set (66 different 'a' and 'b' names)
  • Parallels - Black (1:2 packs) Silver (1:24 packs - Hobby exclusive) Gold (85 per sticker)
  • Printing Plates (odds unknown)

  • Adam Bombing Subset - Basic (1:4 packs) Black (1:24 packs) Silver (1:100 packs) Gold (85 per sticker)

Garbage Pail Kids 2014 Wall Calendar

I know it's only May of 2013, but 2014 is looking to be a pretty fantastic year! What makes me make such a bold statement you ask? Well…the release of the Garbage Pail Kids Wall Calendar of course! Currently being teased on Amazon, this 16-month calendar with bonus stickers is yet another fantastic release from Topps this year. Chrome, MiniKins, BNS3, and now a calendar…it's a great (and expen$ive!) time to be a collector. It's early, and the details are still a little thin, but here's what we know about the calendar:

  • 24 pages
  • Contains images from Series 1 through Series 5 (1985-1986)
  • Includes 4 bonus collectible stickers
  • Published by Abrams (same folks who brought us the fantastic GPK Book)
  • Release date: August 6, 2013

Frankly, I can't think of a better way to share your love of GPK with others than by plastering them on your wall for a year and a half. Head on over and order yours NOW!

The GEEPEEKAY #munnymunth Entry!

Well, well, well…what have we here? A Garbage Pail Kids KidRobot Munny?!? For those of you who don't know, KR is putting on a contest where you can enter to win some fun prizes by customizing one of their DIY toys - so I decided to throw my hat in the ring…and obviously I went the GPK route!

All-in-all I think the project went great. Considering this is the FIRST time I have ever customized one of their toys, and the fact that I haven't painted in 20 years (and never with acrylics), it came out looking pretty darn close to how I pictured.

So, this post isn't JUST to show you my efforts, it's also to shill for some votes!! :) Voting is open until May 31st, and you can vote once a day…so there's still plenty of time to rack up some good ol' support. Simply click on the link below to be taken directly to my entry page - then just click the 'Vote' button! Voila!

Priming the Munny Sketching Painting the skin Gettin' handsy...

My setup The patch! Progress! Finishing touches

Getting his hat size Making the hat All done! Standing proud!

I spent a lot of time on this project, and (although I had fun) I have to admit I have some ulterior motives. I have always wanted to see a GPK KR line, and maybe - just maybe - this could get the ball rolling? You never know!! Thanks so much for your support!! VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

Garbage Pail Kids 2013 Collector's Binder

Hot off the press is a brand new Collector's Binder for 2013. This exclusive binder is the third such binder to be released exclusively from the Topps, Inc. online store, and again features the iconic Adam Bomb on the cover. The following description is from the online store:

  • Deluxe Full Color, Padded Edition
  • Bonus 10 Ultra-Pro 9-Pocket Card Pages
2013 Collector's Binder

I have an official Topps binder in my collection, and even though they tend to be a little overpriced, the quality is pretty solid. This particular album retails for $19.99, and you can order it RIGHT NOW!

Garbage Pail Kids Chrome

Coming this August, Topps is giving the Original Series 1 Garbage Pail Kids some much-deserved love. All 41 original characters (plus 14 'Lost GPK cards') will make up the first ever Garbage Pail Kids Chrome series release. Topps Chrome is a high-quality (high priced) set of cards that includes numerous sought-after inserts. For the GPK release, the inserts are as follows:

  • Concept Sketch (1:6 packs) - 41 different variations that showcase early artwork from John Pound
  • Basic Refractors (1:3 packs) - parallel the base set and feature distinct rainbow shimmer background
  • Other Refractors: Prism (1:199 packs) Gold (50 per card) SuperFractor (1/1)
  • Printing Plates (odds unknown) - plates during the production of the Chrome series
  • Artist Autographs (1,100 total) - special cards featuring a signature from John Pound
  • Prize Redemptions (50 total) - redeemable for special prizes (Ex. uncut OS1 sheet)
ADAM Bomb Refractor Nasty NICK Refractor Global WARREN Lost Up CHUCK Concept Sketch

Dead TED Prism Refractor New Wave DAVE Gold Refractor Weird WENDY Artist Autograph

You will notice that Topps (strangely) decided to use the ANS banner as opposed to the original 1985 arched banner. This is troublesome to many purists, but hopefully the quality of the cards will outweigh this odd design choice. The tentative release date for Garbage Pail Kids Chrome is August 14...and with boxes starting around $70/ea, you better start saving now!!

Coming this October are the Garbage Pail Kids MiniKins! Made of a soft, rubbery material, and measuring approx. 1" tall, this new release should fit in nicely with the original Cheap Toys. There are however a number of changes to this release...

  • Each "Jumbo Blind Pack" will contain 3 mystery figures, 1 visible figure, and four stickers
